During my project so far I have been introduced to The Way of The Hawk. I am planning on including this in my guide because it is an important aspect of being a student-athlete at Hawken. I never knew about this part of our athletic department existed until this year which I think is sad. It is the core values and integrity of what being a Hawken Athlete means. It is now plastered within our weight on the racks so hopefully, others will be introduced to it long before I was because of its visibility. Speaking of the new weight/wellness center during my project I have gotten to see it in all of its beauty. The amount of technology and performance-enhancing equipment will allow our athletes to train at a completely new level. There are new Ipads that help track athletes’ workouts are magnetic and stick to the squat racks. After they were done charging I helped rearrange the home screens and app layouts of the Ipads to condense them and make sure all the apps needed were downloaded and put in the proper place. Although I have done more independent work than I thought I would be doing I have learned so much. We also began working on the outline for the guide and the different categories and importances, and audiences which are the learn to train and train to train groups in regards to the Long-Term Athlete Development Model. For the guide, we have had to research content and different studies based on different aspects of recovery such as the NFL sleep mission where players were given sleep number 360 smart beds. It is a study that focuses on the football players' quality and quantity of sleep and how it affects their recovery and play. In general, sleep is the number one tool to improve recovery and quality of life not only as an athlete but as a student, teacher, parent, coach, or person allowing you to put your best self out there.

  1. Jess, it sounds like you have had some productive time doing independent work for part of this week. The research on sleep is really interesting, and it sounds like it will be valuable as you think through the guide. I'm curious to see more about the categories you are developing when we meet in person next week. Reading The Way of the Hawk and thinking about its connections to your project was really interesting to me. Is there an element of this that especially speaks to you? -- Dr. H
