Doing a senior project can be challenging. You don’t really have many of the constraints or structures that an intensive or school has. This definitely makes it much more interesting because you are able to study and work on topics and ideas you truly enjoy. By wanting to put time and effort into something you are passionate about is mostly a great thing it can be hard to stay focused and grounded without thinking too far ahead or too big. This has been one of the more challenging aspects I have come across during my senior project. I have wanted to try and do too much without thinking about how I actually would be able to accomplish it. Another challenge I ran into was I had to be away physically for three days over the course of the project last week in order to compete in the winter junior national championship in Greensboro North Carolina. While I was away Coach Lew asked me to reflect on the ideas we had been working on in regards to recovery. Personally, I was able to reflect on what I did in between sessions and/or after the competition at the meet. I also could think about whether or not I could do better to switch up or change the habits that maybe weren't as good or were not working to get better results. It also provided me with the experience of how important sleep truly is in performance and in our ability to physically function because I was unable to get as much sleep as I normally do while away and this greatly hindered my cognitive and athletic performance when I got back to Ohio. Working on my project there and while traveling was a bit challenging, but I think it also allowed me to take a step back in order to see it with fresh eyes, and a new perspective.
Jess, I enjoyed reading this blog. I appreciated your reflections about the rewards and challenges of Hawken Projects, and what you had to say about figuring out how to manage your dreams and ambitions with what is doable. I'm glad that the time away for swimming gave you some distance and reflection time that added to the project and your insights!
